collection and storrage of pollen

I collect my pollen early in the morning and let it dry for 24 hours. then i label and store it in the micro tubes untill I am ready to use it.

I then collect all the pollen in the fibers of a cotton swab. This make for easy hybridization, all you have to do is pull it out of the freezer and let it come to room temprature before opening the cap. ( this keeps condensation from building up isde and on the cotton swab. That is what will shorten the life of your pollen) The just go out into the garden and dab away. you dont have to worry about seeing noticable pollen on the pistle it dose not take that much.

Make sure you label and date your tubes.

and store it in the freezer for up to 2 years or longer.

Something fun

Just for kiks and giggles I wondered how well daylilies would grow under hydroponics.
so about 2 weeks ago i put some seed in my aerogarden. They germinated in about 5 days. This is what they look like today only 11 days later. they are about 3 inches tall and have the second set of leaves growing already.

Just thought this would be fun way to spend the winter days.

Another seedling that is getting evaluated. This one is a cross between pure indulgence x royal renaissance. nice 5 inch flower much deeper red than pictured with a blue overlay with white edge. 24 inch scapes and good bud count. let me know your thoughts.

Next time I will discuss how I collect pollen and store it.

untill tomorrow.....

1st Blog

Well it is January 20th and it is a very cold and windy day, but never the less I can't stop thinking of spring and what is just waiting for me in the next few months. I have already begun to see the first signs that the dormant lillies are breaking already.

Over the past few weeks I have been going over my photos of last years blooms, evaluating new seedlings and deciding what crosses to make this summer.

This is a seedling out of God save the queen. the color is true and even brighter in person. Almost a dayglow pink. it has a 30 inch scape and 3 way branching 6 inch blooms. i do not have any bud count though. I looks just the same after a day of 100 degree temps.

But one of the best things about this lilly is its toothy edge.

I just wanted to thank Bill Waldrop for his blog. His blog is what inspired me to set up my own.

untill tomorrow.
